Why We Don’t Guarantee Marketing Results to Prospects

Every week, I receive cold emails from agencies promising dramatic growth.

"We'll double your pipeline."

"We'll triple your leads."

"We'll 4X your customer acquisition."

I've also had marketing firms suggest we make similar claims in our own outreach. One even recommended taking a case study where we helped a client grow customer acquisition by 4X and turning it into a promise that we'd do the same for every prospect.

That's not a marketing strategy. It's a distortion of the truth.

A case study is evidence that something happened. A promise is a guarantee that it will happen again. Those are two very different things.

We don't make that leap, because it's not honest.

The Airline Analogy

Think about flying.

No airline promises you'll arrive at your destination exactly on time. In fact, they go out of their way to explain why they can't.

Weather changes. Air traffic control creates delays. Mechanical issues happen. Labor shortages occur. You might even miss your flight because traffic made you late getting to the airport.

None of those things are within the airline's control.

That doesn't make the airline incompetent. It means they're operating in a complex system with variables they can't predict or influence.

What they can control is how they respond.

They maintain their aircraft. They train their pilots. They monitor the weather. They make difficult decisions when safety demands it. They optimize schedules and routes. They communicate with passengers when plans change.

The best airlines aren't the ones making the boldest promises. They're the ones making the best decisions with the information they have.

Paid digital marketing works the same way.

There Are More Variables Than Anyone Can Control

Every day, we're competing in auctions against businesses whose budgets, strategies, and creative can change overnight.

Platforms release algorithm updates.

Competitors enter and leave the market.

Economic conditions shift.

Consumer behavior evolves.

Your own business changes.

None of those factors are fully under our control.

So when an agency guarantees a specific outcome, one of two things is happening.

Either they're making a promise they can't actually keep, or they're dramatically understating the uncertainty that's inherent to paid digital marketing.

Neither is a great way to begin a long-term partnership.

What We Actually Promise

An illustration of a marketing partnership taking shape.

At Working Planet, we don't promise outcomes we can't control.

Instead, we promise the things we can.

We promise to make evidence-based decisions.

We promise to align our strategy with your business goals, not vanity metrics.

We promise to manage your marketing investment thoughtfully, balancing growth opportunities with financial risk.

We promise to test, learn, adapt, and continually improve as new information becomes available.

And we promise to be transparent about what's working, what isn't, and what we're doing about it.

Will that always produce incredible results?

No one can honestly promise that.

Has it produced incredible results for many of our clients?

Absolutely.

We're proud of our case studies because they're true. They represent what's possible when the right strategy meets the right market at the right time.

But they're examples, not guarantees.

Trust Is Built on Honest Expectations

The relationships we're most proud of are measured in years or even decades, instead of months.

Those relationships don't start with impossible promises. They start with honest expectations.

Our clients trust us because we tell them the truth, even when it's less exciting than the alternative.

Marketing will always involve uncertainty.

Our job is to navigate that uncertainty with discipline, data, experience, and good judgment, just like the best airline navigates changing weather on the way to your destination.

We can't promise clear skies.

We can promise you'll have an experienced crew making the best possible decisions every step of the journey.
